S O M E H E L P F U L H I N T S That may be useful with the FitzRandolph Branches (or Roll Call) -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1. To find something on a page, hold down the CTRL key and press F (CTRL+F). A little window will come up, so enter what you are looking for - name, date, place, whatever. This is the same as using Edit and Find at the top of the screen. It's useful only on this one page. 2. If you would like to find all the descendants of a common ancestor, James Fitz-Randolph for example, get the search window (CTRL+F) and enter James. 3. No need to search for "FitzRandolph". There are too many. Besides sometimes it's spelled Fitz Randolph, sometimes Fitz-Randolph, sometimes Fitzrandolph, etc. Unless you use the exact spelling, the poor computer may not be able to find it. 4. The search engine at the bottom of the first page will search the entire website. 5. When using a common name like James, you'll get a lot of other Jameses as well. Try using his wife's maiden name. There will be far less of those to search. 6. Links are marvelous things. They take you immediately to a place where there is more information about what you want. Links are usually underlined or become so when you pass your cursor over them. Then when you finish, press BACK (on the right mouse button) to return. 7. When you send information, consider sending it to the mailing list instead of directly to a personal address. Our host, Rootsweb, saves all of our mail and anybody can see it at any time. However, a private note is accessible only to the addressee. 8. The mailing list address is: FitzRandolph-L@rootsweb.com but you have to be a member. To subscribe, write FitzRandolph-L-Request@rootsweb.com and include the single word: Subscribe. 9. To see if anyone has written about your favorite ancestor, go to http://searches2.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/listsearch.pl?list=FitzRandolph 10. Just to see in case you've missed any mail, or to follow a common thread, go to http://archiver.rootsweb.com/th/index/FITZRANDOLPH 11. The URL is the name of a webpage. It stands for "Universal Resource Locator" and is the way the computer finds things. Look at the top of this page and you'll see its URL: "http://john.rootsweb.com/FitzRandolph/hints.txt" Type that in from any place, on any computer, at any time and you'll get this page. It's the only one in all the universe with this particular URL. Isn't that fantstic! 12. By using your "Bookmarks" or "Favorites" at the top of the screen, you can save the URL for quick and easy access. 13. Use Copy/Paste or Cut/Paste to move data around. Put the cursor at the top left corner of what you want to move, hold down the button, and drag it to the bottom right corner and let go. On the right mouse button choose "Cut" or "Copy". Then move your cursor to the new place where you want to put the data and press "Paste" on the right mouse button. "Cut" removes it from where it was. "Copy" leaves it there. Both paste it in the new place. The new place could be an Email, another webpage, a different file, or most anywhere on the computer. 14. If you're just getting organized, http://www.noxubee.us/Guide/index.html is a nice little guide that may be of help. Ever wonder how relatives are kin? "Consanguinity" at http://john.rootsweb.com/Longstreet/consangu.html offers some suggestions on kinship. These 2 URLs can be copied to the address window at the top of your screen, using Hint #11 and Hint #13. 15. There's so much interesting material which only you may know, it's a shame to let it get lost. Would you help preserve it? A little note is enough. The Genealogical Summary was designed to serve that purpose. It links to a place for more information than a Branch could handle. Later this was simplified. Now notes also can be included. (See #7 above. The Summary is at http://john.rootsweb.com/FitzRandolph/0000-f.html) ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Although this webpage was developed for the FitzRandolph Family, it can be used with any website. Usually it's sufficient to change the word FitzRandolph to whatever it is you want.
